Here is my first installment about Michigan trivia and interesting Michigan facts.

Did you know that:

Detroit had the first mile of concrete anywhere in the world.  It was poured in 1909 on Woodward Avenue between 6 and 7 Mile Rds.

Michigan has around 150 lighthouses, more than any other U.S. state. The first lighthouses in Michigan were built between 1818 and 1822. They were built to project light at night and to serve as a landmark during the day to safely guide the passenger ships and freighters traveling the Great Lakes.

That the State of Michigan was the first state to enact a bottle bill.  We were the first state to require a deposit on soft drink and alcoholic beverages.  They required a 10 cent deposit which has helped reduce the litter in the state and help start the recycling industry.

The Great Lakes account for one-fifth of the world's surface freshwater supply.

Michigan's shoreline is longer than every other state except Alaska.

Michigan is first in the United States production of peat and magnesium compounds and second in gypsum and iron ore.

In 1817 the University of Michigan was the first university established by any of the states. Originally named Cathelepistemian and located in Detroit the name was changed in 1821. The university moved to Ann Arbor in 1841.
