Oakland County Public Schools

 ♦ In 2005/2006, both Oakland County and Michigan public high schools averaged a 21.5 composite score on the American College Test (ACT), compared to the nation's 21.1.

♦ There are 28 school districts in Oakland County that served 202,127 public school students in 2006. The five largest districts are: Walled Lake (15,578 students); Rochester (14,570 students); Farmington (12,091 students); Troy (11,934 students); and Waterford (11,316 students).

♦ The five school districts with the highest per pupil instructional spending in 2005 were:Southfield ($7,148); Birmingham ($7,028); Troy ($6,953); Bloomfield Hills ($6,907); and Oak Park ($6,829). The average per pupil instructional expenditure in Oakland County was $5,600.

♦ Local communities strongly support their public school districts: nine out of eleven millages presented throughout Oakland County in the 2006/2007 school year were passed by voters.

♦ Oakland County has 19 recognized public school academies. According to Newsweek, the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills was rated number seven in the nation of the top 100 U.S. high schools; nine other Oakland County public high schools from five different school districts were also listed as being in the top 5% of high schools in the country.

♦ All 28 public school districts in the county provide preschool programs including Head Start, Michigan School Readiness, Early Childhood Special Education, and tuition-funded preschool. All but one Oakland County school district provides child care or latchkey services.


 

Oakland County Private Schools 

♦ There are 137 private or parochial schools servicing 31,589 students in Oakland County.

♦ The five largest K-12 private schools in 2003/2004 were: Cranbrook Schools (1,510 students); Detroit Country Day (1,444 students); Southfield Christian (822 students); Our Lady of the Lakes (717 students); and Roeper City and Country (583 students).

♦ Fifty-three percent of the cities, villages, and townships in Oakland Country have private or parochial schools located within their boundaries.
