Canton is one of Metro Detroit Michigan's fastest growing communities.  The population has grown dramatically from over 5,000 people in the 1960's to just over 85,000 residents in the most recent census (2005).  Though with the slowing economy in 2007 and 2008 Canton home building has come to a crawl. 

 Canton Township was the nation's 20th safest municipality with a population over 75,000 during 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.  This was based on Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics.  The designation is based on crime statistics in six different areas: burglary, murder, robbery, aggravated assault, rape, and auto theft.

Canton is served by three different school districts: Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, Van Buren School District, and Wayne-Westland Community School District. The majority of Canton residents childern go to Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.   Plymouth Canton Schools is a district that has 14 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, and 2 high schools.  Canton students in the Plymouth Canton school district consistently score higher than the state average on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) and the national average on the Standard Aptitude Test (SAT).
